Happy Mother's Day!

Sunday is going to be a special day as it is Mothering Sunday.

We have been busy making some wonderful cards and presents, 

but we have also been thinking about what makes our mum so special . . . 

Maisy - "She loves me. My mummy brushes my hair nice and slowly"

Gethin - "She cooks nice food. She gets shampoo in my hair and makes it not get in my eyes"

Ava - "My mummy cuddles me. She picks me up from Nursery and makes me laugh"

Jasmine - "I love her and she plays with me"

Sam - "She looks after me. She cuddles me. She kisses me at bedtime"

Freddie - "She gives me hugs. She gives me kisses - she snuggles me in my bed"

Daisy - "I love her! She brings me some toys"

Here is a small selection of some of the lovely cards and presents that the children have made - they thought very carefully about what their mummy looked like before they drew her on their card!

Bird's Nests

Today we heard the birds singing in the trees and we spotted a nest very high up in a tree. We talked about why birds build nests. They need a home, a place to lay their eggs and care for their chicks. We learnt that birds build their nests in places off the ground so the eggs and chicks are safe from wind, rain, strong sun and predators such as foxes, cats and people. We then had a go at making our own nests using twigs, leaves and dried grass. We then put an egg in our nests to see if they would hold an egg safely, and they all did! 

What do you think of our nests? We had the advantage of having 2 hands. It must be tricky with just a beak!

Our Stars of the Week for last week were Jasmine and Ember - congratulations and well done to both of you!

Sport Relief 2014!

We had great fun wearing something red and exploring a range of activities - while at the same time helping to raise lots of money for Sport Relief 2014!

Spring Time Observations!

When we got back from our spring walk, we thought about the beautiful flowers that we had seen - here are just a few of the children's wonderful interpretations . . .

Each group also shared their thoughts and observations to create a collaborative poem . . .

Looking for signs of Spring . . .

Having found out about the Hindu festival of Holi, we thought about some of the things that remind us of spring time . . . 

Reece - "Tadpoles turn into frogs"

Oliver S - "We could look for flowers"

Ruby - "I saw some daffodils at lunch club yesterday"

Evan W - "Plants need sunshine to grow. Rain comes from clouds"

Jacob - "We might see buzzy bees"

Violet - "A bumble bee getting nectar from the flower!"

 Then we went out for a walk in the school grounds to look for signs of spring:

We found lovely spring flowers . . .

And new sticky buds waiting to open!

Unfortunately though, we didn't find any warm spring sunshine!

Celebrating Holi!

We have enjoyed sharing a variety of celebrations this term, and this week, we have been finding out about a Hindu spring festival - called Holi! 

Known as the festival of colour and lasting anything from three to five days, it celebrates the arrival of spring flowers and when the main crops are almost ready for the spring harvest.

We thought about some of our favourite colours and what happens if we mix colours together . . . 

Alisha - "Do you know what happens when I mix pink with white? It makes light pink!"

We decided to explore what would happen when we did some colour mixing to paint our spring flowers . . . 

Mixing red and blue to make purple!

Rain Catchers

As part of our theme on weather we have made rain catchers. We enjoyed decorating them with leaves .grass and flowers before adding our measuring sticks.

                                           

We also had fun digging for worms.......

                             and swinging too!

• Friday is Sport Relief Day - the children can wear something red and bring in £1.00 donation to take part in a carousel of sporting activities during the morning session - let's hope the weather remains kind!

Our Stars of the Week for last week were Daisy, Violet and Esme. Congratulations and well done!

The Adventures of the Nursery Pancake!

We enjoyed our Pancake Day celebrations so much last week, we decided to carry on the theme and create our own story books about the adventures of the Nursery Pancake!

We created one story at the start of the week, and a different one at the end of the week so that we could involve as many children and their ideas as possible.

One book was shaped like a frying pan, and the other like a giant pancake!

The children decided on what would happen - and used the camera to take the photographs. Here is a little 'taster' of their books . . .

The other group decided the dinosaur might eat him when he got to the sand tray!

The adventure continued and in the other story, included a visit to the Chinese take-away role play area! 

But of course, every good story has to come to an end - in the other book, it wasn't Kipper that finally ate the pancake - it was Mick Inkpen!

We hope you have enjoyed our books - we had lots of fun making them!

• This week your allocation of options confirmation for the summer term, along with your NEF form will be coming home - please ensure that these are both completed and returned to Nursery by Wednesday 19th March. Thank you.

• We are still taking part in 'The Big Pedal' this week - so remember to 'tick' the chart in the courtyard if you come to Nursery on your bike or scooter (parents included!)

• As stated in 'The Bell' this week, we have noticed that nut products are coming into school in packed lunches. Please be sure to check all ingredients on products as we have children in school with nut allergies. Thank you.

Celebrating World Book Day!

As you know, we love books in Nursery, and this week we have been celebrating World Book Day!

Perfect Pancakes!

We read a great story called 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' before writing our own shopping list, just like Mr Wolf did, so that we could buy all the ingredients to make some yummy pancakes in Nursery!

First we measured out all the ingredients

Then we sieved the flour

Next we added the egg and milk, whisking it all together

Can you see the changes that have taken place to the mixture?

Mrs Florian had to be very careful when she used the hot frying pan - we could smell the pancakes cooking - they tasted delicious!

And of course, you can't have Pancake Day without having pancake races - we tried very hard not to drop our 'pancakes'!

Pancake Hunt

We have been learning about Shrove Tuesday: the day we all love to eat pancakes. We had a pancake hunt, we had to look high and low and some of them were a bit tricky to find. We ticked the numbers off on our clip boards as we found them and them we cleverly arranged all the pancakes in the correct order.
