Porridge Party Fun!

We have really enjoyed our focus on Goldilocks and the Three Bears - we decided to invite our own bears to come to Nursery for the day, and to join us at our porridge party!

Of course, it wouldn't be the same without a walk in the woods . . . 
We kept an eye out for Goldilocks along the way, and the children also looked out for the big bad Wolf from the story of Little Red Riding Hood!
We had a little rest and our bears enjoyed sharing stories together . . . 
                             


Back inside, it was time to enjoy our porridge together.



We tried different healthy toppings, including apple, banana and pear.

We all had so much fun - and Goldilocks was nowhere to be seen!

Hibernation and Animal Homes

Today we learnt that some animals go to into a long, deep sleep during the winter months. This is called hibernation. Hedgehogs hibernate through the winter months, often under a cozy pile of leaves. We also learnt about other animal homes; a fox's' den, a badger's set and a squirrel's dray. We then  got into teams to create homes for various woodland animals to sleep in.

We also found a big spider who had found a cozy home in our forest school shed!

When Goldilocks went to the house of the Bears . . .


We have been focussing on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears this week. 

As well as reading different versions and singing the song, we used an activity on the computer where we matched the spoons to the bowls, and the bowls to the bears!

We used lots of different size related vocabulary including the following:
big, tiny, small, short, tall, middle-size, medium, little, bigger, smaller, and biggest!

What words would you have used to describe the different sized bears, bowls and spoons?

Cookies for Grandma!

We have been making some cookies for Grandma (and as a special treat for us!)
Before we got started, Oliver L told us "You have to wash your hands so you don't have germs"




First we measured out the ingredients







Then we mixed them all together






After we had made our cookie shapes . . .  



Wanda told us "We need to bake it in the oven"








Then they were ready to eat - DELICIOUS!

Wanted!

We have been on the look-out for the Wolf! 



Before we designed our 'WANTED' posters, we talked about what the Wolf looked like . . .




Erin P - "Really big eyes"
Isabel C - "He's got sharp teeth"
Sienna - "He's got a long tongue"
Iris - "He's got big claws"

In the Forest or in the Woods?

When reading different versions of 'Little Red Riding Hood', we noticed that in some, Grandma's Cottage is in the 'Woods' and in others it is in the 'Forest'. As we have had a 'move around' in nursery and have re-located our book corner, we asked the children to 'vote' where it would be - in the woods, or in the forest! 


Each child put a 'tick' on the tree labelled either 'In the Woods' or 'In the Forest' to make their choice, then we counted them to see which was the most popular. It was very close, but 'In the Woods' won by two votes!


We had also noticed a 'Rule of the Woods' sign in one of the stories, and talked about what 'rules' we should have to ensure we looked after our lovely new 'book corner in the woods'!
This is what the children decided on:

            1. Be quiet so the Wolf won't hear you!
            2. Be gentle with the books
            3. Sit down nicely
            4. Turn the pages carefully
            5. Put the book back on the rack

  We decided to have a vote for where our 'Grandma's Cottage' role play should be too
 - this time, 'In the Forest' won by two votes!


These were the 'rules' that the children decide on for Grandma's Cottage:

              1. Take turns
              2. Only three people at a time
              3. Act out the story
              4. Put everything tidy at the end 


Now we are looking forward to using both new areas - but we will keep an eye out for any Wolves!

In a Far Away Land . . .

For the fist half-term, we are going to have a focus on 'A Far Away Land'! 
We began by reading a great book with lots of characters from traditional tales, and we also acted out 'There was a Princess Long ago'!
The children shared their knowledge of the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, here are a couple of their responses . . .

Grace - "Goldilocks knocks on the door and there was nobody in and when she knocked the door her tummy was rumbling. She tried it (the porridge) and she said that one was too hot and then she tried the medium size 
and she ate it all up"

Colette - "The Three Bears went to the cottage then Baby Bear cried because Goldilocks had eat all the porridge!"

They also shared their knowledge of Little Red Riding Hood . . .

Lexie - "The Wolf ate Grandma, and the Wolf pretended to be Grandma"

Oliver BH - "The Wolf didn't eat Grandma - because she runned and jumped in the wardrobe!"

This led onto us talking about how there are many different versions of the same tale - we are going to try and share lots of different ones over the next couple of weeks!

One Year with Kipper

We loved sharing so many Julia Donaldson books in Nursery last term, and will continue to do so.
This term however, we going to have a new focus author - the wonderful Mick Inkpen.

Going for Goals!

As part of our Darwin Day activities this week, we have been thinking about 'Bouncebackability' and 'Going for Goals'!

We played a game where we had to try and pass the tambourine silently around the circle! 
It was very tricky, but we tried our best, and we got there in the end!

The children thought about what they are good at - and why. 
Isabelle told us -"I'm really good at I-Spy, I always play it in the car with daddy" and Caleb said "I'm very good at drawing 'cause my daddy showed me and I practised"

We talked about how some people make a New Year Resolution at this time of year, and set themselves a 'goal' to work towards. 
 The children have each made a New Year Promise based on keeping our nursery a safe and happy place to be.

Aisha - "I want to share the book corner so everyone can read a story"

William - "Look after the books"

Boyan - "Share the toys"

Willow - "Tidy up at tidy up time"

We are all going to help each other to keep our promises, and if we have a setback, we will help each other to think positively and show bouncebackability so that we can keep going and reach our goal!

Tweet Treats


At Wellie Wednesday today we listened carefully to the birds and talked about how some migrate to warmer climates during the winter months. Other birds stay, managing to keep warm by eating more food and fluffing up their feathers.These birds can get very hungry because worms are very difficult to get out of the ground when it is hard and frozen so they have to manage by finding berries or seeds. We decided to help them by making some special bread cone treats for the birds to feed on. We spread lard over the fir cones and then rolled them in bread crumbs before hanging them in the trees. Next week we’re going to see if the birds have had their tweet treat feast and whether they fly back for more!
