Happy Wesak from the Nursery!

At Wesak, we think of the Buddha
Who sat under the Bodhi tree
He taught everyone to be kind and good
And to live very happily!

We watched a video clip about a little girl and her family who were preparing for, and celebrating Wesak - and then we had a lovely story about the Elephant and a dog!

It was fun making a hand-print elephant on the front of our cards - we concentrated really hard to create a repeating colour pattern around the edge.

We worked together to create a mandala - Buddhists use these for meditation and in their art.

It was a bit tricky trying to paint the pasta to create our friendship bracelets to give to someone who we think is very kind - but they looked great when they were finished!

Happy Wesak everyone!

Look What's Happened!

Do you remember when we planted our sunflower seeds? Well - look at what has happened to them now! We were very excited this week when we noticed that some of them had started to grow.

We are keeping a close eye on them to see what happens next. What changes do you predict might take place over the next few weeks?
Let us know!

A little reminder for the week . . .

  • Thank you to everyone that has brought in their pre-cut plastic bottles in readiness for next week! Please can any outstanding ones come in by Friday of this week. Thank you.
  • As you know, next week is our Art's Week. Although we have aprons for the children to wear, we don't usually have all the children doing art at the same time! Please feel free to send in an over-sized shirt for your child to wear for added protection for their clothes (named please).
  • The new menus have now arrived - your child will be bringing one home this week. As always, please remember to write down your child's choice for each day. Thank you.

Labelling parts of a plant!

This week we have been looking closely at the different parts of a plant. We used two different activities on the computer where we had to move the labels into the right position, and then some of us copied out the labels to go on our display. We have also started learning a new song to help us remember what special job each part of the plant does!

We would love to hear about any songs or rhymes that you know about the different parts of a plant - please let as know!

Wriggly Worms

We were hungry birds today and searched for wriggly worms. We found red, purple, black, brown and green 'worm!' The red and purple ones the easiest to spot but the green and brown were tricky to find as these were camouflaged - disguised by their colour the natural environment.

Which colour wriggly worm do you think is the most camouflaged?

We also enjoyed enjoyed making muddy pools, making 'log dogs', examining the flora and hunting for mini beasts!

Can you name these mini beasts?

Celebrating May Day!

This week we have been finding out about May Day. The tradition of celebrating the end of winter began long ago, when villagers would dance around a maypole on the village green and choose a May Queen.

We had lots of fun singing and dancing to 'Here we come gathering knots of May'. The knots were the blossom of the hawthorn. We also took our own 'maypole' out onto the school field!

Do you like the photograph of the lovely flowers we brought in from home to celebrate May Day? Some of the children looked very carefully at them to do some great observational art work.

Did you do anything special to celebrate? We would love to hear about the traditions in your local area, perhaps you will be doing something over the Bank Holiday weekend - let us know!
