Flower labels . . .

After learning a rhyme about 'Five Little Flowers' we reflected on the verses and shared our current knowledge of the different parts of a flower.
The children then helped to create a big flower for our display and made labels for the different parts . . .

Can you see where the roots are?
How many petals can you see?

Perhaps you could create an imaginary flower where all the parts are in different places - we would love to see what it looks like!

What will Jasper find?

We recently enjoyed the story of Jasper's Beanstalk and have been using some pictures from the story to sequence the beginning, middle and end.
Jasper was left looking for giants in the book, but we thought it would be fun to change the ending and imagine what might happen if he went up a different beanstalk and found something else!

Here are just a few of the children's ideas
of what Jasper might find . . .

"A gnome" (Noah)

"A mouse" (Alisha)

"Money!" (Sam)

"A hungry caterpillar" (Lottie)

We have put all of their ideas together in a book of 'alternative endings' and added it to our display.

We would love to hear your ideas too!

Celebrating Wesak!

This week we have been thinking about all the kind things that we can do for one another in Nursery and finding out about the special Buddhist Festival of Wesak.

We worked together to create a mandala . . .

Buddhists use these for meditation and in their art.

We have all made a promise to go on our 'Kindness Tree' and are creating a 'Peaceful Place' where we can go to be quiet and spend time thinking and reflecting.

Everyone enjoyed the fruit jelly that we made for sharing - we explored one of the jelly cubes before we started:

"It feels all soft - it's all squishy!" (Blossom)

"It's sticky - smells like strawberry!" (Esme)

And predicted what might happen when the hot water was added:

"It will melt - because the water's all hot - it will look like juice" (Summa)

Then if any changes would take place during the time it was in the fridge:

"It will go all bumpy because it will cool down" (Maisy)

"It will turn cold - it will be wobbly - cause jelly is wobbly!" (Alfie)

But the best part was when we sat together under the trees on the field to share our delicious jelly . . .

"Yummy!"

We would love to hear about the kind things that you try and do for other people - and any different ways that you have found to celebrate Wesak - let us know!

Greenfield’s Gardeners

We have been busy the last few weeks creating our sensory garden along the new pathway. We have sowed poppy and sunflower seeds which we carefully water and that will hopefully shoot over the next week or so. We also planted lavender, rosemary, sweet peas, honey suckle and pussy willow. We are really looking forward to them all flowering, they will be lovely to see, smell and touch.

Take a walk along the new path.

I wonder if you can spot any of the plants we have planted?

Fantastic Flowers!

Paintings by Oliver E, Alisha and Ava

To help celebrate May Day, the children brought in a flower from home.
We have been using these as inspiration for our art work . . .

The finished results were fantastic!

   Felicity looked very carefully
Bethan even included the ladybird!

We have lots more examples on display in our Nursery Courtyard!

May Day Celebrations!

The tradition of celebrating the end of winter began long ago, when villagers would dance around a maypole on the village green and choose a May Queen. Today, on the 1st May children dress up as a May Queen and her followers put garlands in their hair. They parade around through the town, or travel on a flower-covered lorry.

On our return after the May Day Bank Holiday, we thought we would have a go at dancing round the maypole - it was very tricky!

Did you do anything special to celebrate with your family? We would love to hear all about it.

Five Green Beanstalks . . .

To link in with our focus on Jasper's Beanstalk this week, we had lots of fun with our number rhyme - 'Five Green Beanstalks'!

As well as locating / recording the numeral to represent how many beanstalks would be left after each verse, the children went on a 'leaf hunt'! On their return, we counted the leaves to see how many they had, compared who had 'more' or 'fewer' and then worked together to sequence the numerals on them to create our new number line.

Now they will be looking to see if the numbers stay in the right order each day!

Jasper's Beanstalk!

We have read a great story called 'Jasper's Beanstalk' by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen!

The children looked closely at a real bean and thought about what might be inside . . .

Milena - "Maybe there's a tiny seed in there"

Freddie - "1,2,3,4 - four green leaves!"

Oliver P S - "Treasure - gold!"

Summa  - "A spider and a butterfly"

We thought the children might like to plant their own bean . . .

First they wrote their name on a pot

Then they put some compost in

Next they made a hole for the bean to go in, and covered it up with more compost

Finally, they carefully watered it

Now we are waiting to see what happens!

Here are some of the children's predictions . . .

Gethin - "It will grow in the pot, like a tree"

Evie - "It will grow into a giant plant"

Cameron - "Lots of leaves!"

Harley - "There will be a giant up there - it will grow into a beanstalk"

What do you think will happen to our beans?

Welcome back!

Welcome back to everybody following the Easter break!

As always, the term ahead is going to be a very busy one.
We are starting with a focus on gardening and have been talking to the children to find out what they know already about plants and flowers . . .

Maisy - "I water the plants for my nanny to make them grow. It wets them"

Ava - "There's petals on flowers. There's some things in the middle"

Jasmine - "We need some seeds and we need to wait"

Harley - "They grow"

Evan E - "The sun makes them grow"

Alfie - "Birds try to eat the seeds and we have to build a scarecrow to make them go away"

Reece - "Trees grow big and big and big!"

We then asked them what they would like to find out . . .

Ember - "I want to find out about how they grow" (Flowers)

Georgia - "Why do apples grow on trees?"

Oliver E - How do plants drink?"

Daisy - "How do vegetables grow?"

Oliver S - "Why do conkers have a wrapper on top?"

Violet - "How do flowers eat?"

Esme - "Do flowers have feet?"

We thought these were some super questions - what would you have asked?
