One Year With Kipper!

In January, Kipper makes a New Year Resolution about throwing snowballs at Tiger . . .

Click on our link to 'Share a Story' to find out what we thought of our latest Mick Inkpen book!

Star of the Week!

Last week, Louis P and Freddie were our 'Stars'. Congratulations and well done to both of you!

Shape Toys!

We have had lots of fun looking at 'shape' toys!

Some children chose to match the shapes on top of the picture . . .

"It's round and round!"

And some chose to have a go at re-creating the picture by printing with the shapes . . .

"Triangles, two rectangles for the tummy, a square head. The ears and the arms - rectangles!"

Can you create your own shape toy?
Which shapes will you use?

We've been designing puppets . . .

Having seen Noah's lovely puppet Sweep, we thought the children might like to design their own puppet!

Some are going to make a sock puppet . . .

Lydia is going to paint bottle tops for eyes and sellotape them on. "He's going to have a big, big nose!" Lydia chose some "soft" felt for the nose, and wool for the "long pink hair" Her puppet is going to be called Amy!

Corey has chosen the name Puppet John. He also chose to use wool for the hair and bottle top eyes, but he is going to use a button for the nose and tissue paper for the mouth. Corey is going to glue everything on.

Other children are going to use a
wooden spoon . . .

Poppy wants to use cotton wool for the hair on her puppet, with wool for the eyes and mouth, big button hands and a painted yellow fairy! Her puppet is going to be named Foo-foo!

Emily has decided to name her puppet Mum! She is going to use buttons for the eyes and mouth, wool for the hair and tissue paper for the mouth. Emily is going to glue everything on.

Would you choose a sock or a spoon to make your puppet? What would it look like?

Stick Man

We had a go at making our own Stick Men and Women today after reading the story ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. We collected sticks, leaves and grasses and then tied them together with raffia before drawing on faces.

I wonder what adventures our Stick Men will have? Will they be super heroes protecting the forests and woodlands? What do you think?.........

Star of the Week!

Our Stars of the Week for last week were Taylor,
Eva and Louie C.
Well done and congratulations to all of you!

Kipper's Toybox

We have loved looking more closely at our own favourite toys and we think you would really enjoy the story of Kipper's Toybox. Click on the link to our Share a Story to find out more!

Favourite Toys!

We loved the toys in Kipper's Toybox and the children have been bringing in their own favourite toys from home!

This is what some of the children told us about their special toy. . .

"My football - you need to kick it like this. I play with it inside too" (Taylor)

"Charlie Bear - he walks around and then I hold his hand so he doesn't slip" (Ellie W)

"Sweep from Sooty. It makes a squeak in here. It's a puppet - all soft and cuddly. It gets into bed with me" (Noah)

"An aeroplane. It's red. When you push it back it moves" (Freddie)

Some of the children used pastels to represent their toy . .

Other children painted them . . .

And some used either collage or a combination of paint and collage!

What does your favourite toy look like? We would love to hear all about them.

Where are the Toys?

Having read the wonderful story of Kipper's Toybox, we had lots of fun developing our understanding and use of positional vocabulary.
We helped the toys from the toy box to play a game of hide and seek with Kipper - can you see where Sock Thing is?

Ice Cube Investigation!

Something very exciting has happened in Nursery - the children have received a letter from the Snowman! His pipes have frozen so he hasn't got any water to make a drink, but he has got some ice cubes in the freezer.

The children were eager to help! We decided to investigate what would happen if the ice cubes were taken out of the freezer.

Tillie - "When I had ice cubes in my drink they melted!"

Louis P - "They will melt - cause it's hot. They're cold, they're hard. Really, really cold! It's melting already"
(How do you know it's melting?)
"Cause it's wet, it's dripping!"

Tillie - "Our hands are making it melt. It's dripping water. It's slippy"
(So where do you think the Snowman could put his ice cubes?)

Louis P - "On the radiator when it's hot!"
(Where else can you think of?)
"In our hands, then they can melt - cause our hands are warm!"

Now the children are looking forward to writing back to the Snowman to offer him some advice!

Today we talked about how some birds migrate to warmer climates during the winter months. Other birds stay keeping warm by eating more food or fluffing up their feathers. These birds can get very hungry because it is difficult to get worms out of the ground when it is hard and frozen, so they have to manage by finding seeds and berries. We decided to help the birds by making some special bread cone treats for them to feed on. We spread lard over the pine cones then rolled them in breadcrumbs before hanging them in the trees. Next week we are going to see if the birds have enjoyed their tweet treat feast and whether they fly back for more!

Do you think the birds in your garden would like a tweet treat?

Star of the Week!

Congratulations and well done to Poppy and Aaron  - they were both awarded 'Star of the Week' for last week!

Kipper's Snowy Day!

Huge cotton wool snowflakes are tumbling past Kipper's window and Kipper can't wait to go outside!

We thought this would be a great first story to read from our new author for the term - Mick Inkpen.

Some of the children recognised Kipper and we all loved his snowy adventure. Click on our 'Share a Story' book to take you to our story blog where you can find out more!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back - we hope you had a lovely Christmas and would like to wish you all a very happy New Year!

This week the children have been very excited to be back, we have been thinking about how to keep our Nursery a safe and happy place to be. Everyone has made a 'New Year Promise' - these have been displayed on snowflakes which we have added to our 'Winter' display.

Here are just a few examples . . .

Corey - "I promise to share toys with my friends"

Lydia - "I promise to sit and listen carefully on the carpet"

Thomas W - "I promise to play nicely"

We would love to hear about the New Year Resolutions you have made!

The children have also been thinking about 'Winter' time:

Aaron - "Put your gloves on and your hat on, cause it's cold!"

Charlie - "We make a snowman, sticks and then a carrot for the nose. A scarf and a hat and some eyes. Pom poms make the eyes, sticks for the arms"

Louie C - "The snow melts. When it's hot the snow melts and it goes away"

Pastel drawing of a snowman!

Now we just need some snow so that we can build some snowmen - and then see what happens when they melt!
